Earlier this year, we shared the news that our CEO, Rob Deeks, had been named in the King’s New Year Honours List to receive an MBE for his “Services to Young People and the Community in Slough.”

A few weeks ago, that recognition became a very special moment as Rob travelled to Windsor Castle to receive his MBE, presented by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, Prince William.

Rob was joined for the occasion by his wife, Tej, his mum Kathryn, and his brother Andy.

It was, in Rob’s words, a incredibly proud moment and a hugely humbling experience.

A conversation about young people

During the investiture, Rob had the opportunity to talk with HRH William about something that has been central to his work throughout his career: the importance of taking a person-centred approach when working with young people.

For Rob, this means looking beyond labels and circumstances to understand each young person as an individual, and finding what helps to unlock their potential.

It is an approach that has shaped his work with Together As One for more than two decades.

Rob first joined the organisation in 2003, when we were known as Aik Saath, and became CEO in 2009. Since then, he has worked alongside young people, colleagues, volunteers and partners across Slough to tackle difficult issues, build stronger communities and create opportunities for young people to lead and thrive.

Grateful for the support along the way

While the MBE recognises Rob’s individual contribution, he is very clear that he could not have reached this point alone.

Reflecting on the day, Rob said:

“I felt incredibly humbled to be there and very grateful to everyone who has helped me along the way. I’ve received so much support over the years, and this recognition belongs to all those people who have been part of the journey.”

For everyone at Together As One, it was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Rob, but also to celebrate the young people, families, colleagues, volunteers and partners who have helped shape the organisation over the years.

The honour is a recognition of what has been achieved, but our focus remains firmly on the future: supporting young people, unlocking potential and building a more united community.

And, of course, we’re delighted to finally be able to say:

Congratulations, Rob Deeks MBE. 🎖️

We couldn’t be prouder.
